Visual Rhetoric

This is a photo that has a lot of visual rhetoric witihin it. Just by looking at the photo you can see so much about who these men were and how they felt towards one another. The location of the second man is very important because you can see the man's true feelings toward the man in the forground because there is nothing holding him back from showing how he doesn't trust him. Since the man in the forground is all alone on his smoke break, it shows that all the other men that work with him don't trust him either. The placement of the line above the mens' heads is very important because it almost shows how all the men are being forced to be in the close quarters even though they dont all like eachother. It shows how they are cramped and uncomfortable. It is also clear that the enviornment in which they are in is very dirty and cold. The large contrast in the photo helps portray this dirty and very cold feeling.

Fine image. Next step--note context and purpose as the starting point, then move to the analysis of the image. What are additional appeals, for example?
