Being a charter doesn’t make school good or bad

Cepeda writes about the ongoing debate about the troubles with charter schools in Chicago in comparison to the public schools in CPS. She describes how it is hard to make a valid decision as to if the charter schools are actually failing students becasue it is not possible, at this time, to compare success rates completely because of a numerous amount of factors. These factors include, neighborhoods that feed into the school and are not in the schools control. Cepeda wants to show to her readers that charter schools arent going anywhere and that there needs to be in a reform in thinking about these "failing" schools before there can be a reform in the actual schools.

My five holiday wishes (and, OK, world peace)

Cepeda's purpose in writing this column is to show the problems going on in Chicago that need to be addressed. She sees this as an opportunity to show the most important issues to her in Chicago at this time. She writes it as a holiday wish list to make it more appropriate for the upcoming holiday season and adds a comedic affect to her column. She accomplishes this goal of incorporating a holiday spirit in her column by having a cheery and playful tone even while discussing the problems in Chicago. She uses words like, "craziness" to have a lighter feeling toward a serious idea.

Public schools are failing the most gifted students

Throuout this column, Cepeda wrote about the hardships that gifted students were going through in public schools because of the lack of attention they were recieving. She wrote about how students who were above average intelligence were scoring worse on tests because they werent challenged and were not motivated to do well in school because their needs for more intense education werent being met. Cepeda also discusses how some districts are viewing gifted student programs and "enrollment pressure" and that they are making the schoool less desirable and that working toward helping gifted students isnt something that is worth the extra funding. She also discusses how since the programs at different public schools are being shut down, the hope for having motivated, above average students is decreasing before it even had a chance to begin.

Censorship Image #3

This image shows the artists view on internet censorship. Through the lack of color, only using black and white, the artist is showing that its a serious matter and that there isnt anything happy or colorful about the sensorship. In the image there is a pop up of an alert that says that there was a "1st ammendment error". This shows that the artist doesnt think that censorship is in line with what the 1st ammendment allows in the United States. The artists shows through this image that censorship is wrong and that if there is censorship, then there is no way for all of our rights that we have been promised can be upheld.

Censorship #2

Senseless censor

In this article the author is making an argument against the censorship that is occuring in Iranian media. The author is making the case that censorship is ineffective. He argues that censorship doesnt make an impact because we are living in the 21st century where we have access to everything on the internet and trying to get rid of something would be nearly impossible because of how quickly everything moves and how fast everything is seen. He also argues that censorship is self distructive in nature. He argues that when people see that something is being censored they become more interested in learning about whatever is being censored when otherwise they would have never even seen it. He also suggests that the people who are looking to censor more need to start by censoring themselves and not the media.

Editorial: Censorship has no place on a college campus

In this editorial the author is showing how censorship at the University of Wisconsin -Stout is getting out of hand. The author explains how because people are being incredibly sensitive to not necessarily politically correct statements that people's right to free speech will become less and less important and soon there will be no sense of that right. He knows that there is a time and a place for excessively innappropriate remarks but he thinks that there is really a sense of over-sensitivity and that is what's causing all of the personal and general censoring at the university and in America as a whole. He finally believes that the United States was created off of the base of having the freedom to express what they deemed was appropriate to express and that if freedom of speech is gotten rid of then that would be causing the country to be dishonored.

Visual Rhetoric

This is a photo that has a lot of visual rhetoric witihin it. Just by looking at the photo you can see so much about who these men were and how they felt towards one another. The location of the second man is very important because you can see the man's true feelings toward the man in the forground because there is nothing holding him back from showing how he doesn't trust him. Since the man in the forground is all alone on his smoke break, it shows that all the other men that work with him don't trust him either. The placement of the line above the mens' heads is very important because it almost shows how all the men are being forced to be in the close quarters even though they dont all like eachother. It shows how they are cramped and uncomfortable. It is also clear that the enviornment in which they are in is very dirty and cold. The large contrast in the photo helps portray this dirty and very cold feeling.

Time for NASA to Deliver
http://blog.al.com/times-views/2011/09/time_for_nasa_to_deliver_edito.html

John Peck argues that NASA has been letting people down in that there have been no large advancements in their programs and that there have been large scientific set backs. He also argues that the NASA budget is only a small portion of the national budget and the government cant afford to keep giving so much money to tiny parts of the NASA program such as toilet handles. He also believes that the Marshall Space Flight Center is exactly what NASA needs to recieve our trust again and re-spark the space programs.

NASA Sets Sights on Mars After

Unmanned Moon Shot

Today, NASA launched an unmanned spacecraft to the moon. The goal for launching this moon porbes are to monitor and map out the terrain of the moon. This launch was just a short month after the launch of Juno, another spacecraft, to Jupiter. The spacecraft is expected to arrive on Jupiter in July 2016. The Grail lift offs were not uneventful this morning when the weather provided difficulty for launch. But after some wait, Grail went up at 9:08 this morning. Mars is NASAs next target in that they want to send a rover to go over the terrain and research the hospitality of Mars. NASA also wants to explore the 96-mile crater on Mars. In the meantime, NASA is requesting students across the nation to come up with a better name for the Grail probes to make sure the children have an influence.
